'S' is for 'Scapegoat'

There's a lot of boogeymen and boogeywomen in American politics. Our discourse is fairly rife with them. Single mothers, gay men, "militant" feminists, corrupt union bosses, welfare queens, unscrupulous lawyers and kids who play violent video games are all victims (deservedly or otherwise) of the moral panic of the perpetually offended.

And then there's teachers. Oh, teachers. Unlike welfare check-cashing scammers who abuse the system or lesbians who hate men because they're men, we've all come into contact with a teacher. Probably several dozen, in our lives.

In recent years, you'd be hard-pressed to find a group more scapegoated by politicians on both sides of the aisle. It's both convenient and fashionable to bash the profession in overt and subtle ways.
